The collections contain approximately 500,000 maps, 300,000 aerial photographs and satellite images, 8,000 atlases and reference books, as well as a growing number of geospatial datasets.

In addition to other gifts to UF, in 1991 Smathers made an astounding $20 million bequest to benefit the library system. George A Smathers passed away at the age of 93 on Jan. 20, 2007.
